Very Strong and Mostly Variable

Richard Gaskill

For pleasure and retirement, for fishing and foraging, for commerce and transport we have been drawn to the Sussex coast for millennia. The benefits of coastal living are well documented, yet the relationship between people and the sea is often one of contradiction; feelings of nostalgia and affection mingle with distrust and fear. We are infatuated by an unfettered sea yet we try to tame the waves by building groynes and seawalls. Such interventions are often met with a counter-response from nature. These images explore the unspoken dialogue and interplay between land, sea and humanity.
